I have no idea what the light on the pole is all about: the yellow bulb and all. The area is in the Mission District of SF and formally was full of light industrial buildings. Now, many of the buildings are used by artists, and slowly are being converted to Tech industry uses - one of the reasons rents are so high in San Francisco. Maybe the light is a sort of warning that a truck is coming out of somewhere, and it flashes/buzzs in these occurrences.
This building with it's whole wall of wonderful factory windows is like my dream living space. I noticed inside there are polished hardwood floors that retain their worn look from being industrial. Mmmmm, yes!
Window Discussion I had a small warehouse space in SF for a long time. It had one window like this. It was 5 panes wide and 3 panes high. The middle three panes of the two top rows were the window that opened. It had a pin hinge on the center of both sides so that the middle row of panes opened outward, and the upper row of panes opened inward - like a big louver. You can see such an arrangement of the openable windows in this photo where two of those kind of windows are pictured.
In the center at the bottom was an iron bar with notches that held the window open, the notches hooking onto the (non existent) window sill. The two windows in the picture have the metal fixture for holding the metal bar, but the bar is removed, so the windows cannot be held open and I guess are intended to be permanently closed. The bar would hang down vertically on the inside when the window was closed and make it impossible for anybody to open the window from the outside; it was a brilliantly simple method to open windows wide for fresh are, that at the same time acted as an awning to keep out rain, while letting in the max amount of light and air, and was self locking when closed.
If I owned this building, I'd have a room in it for all my LJ/DW friends to come visit anytime they liked. The room would be equipped with paints and easels, musical instruments, etc., and funny pictures would be the "rent" for their month long visits.

What a fantastic idea. Consider me and Humuhumu booked in for a visit. :D
