We went over to Crockett for a spaghetti dinner benefit for something. Then we walked around for awhile exploring this old river town. Matt Damon had a job in this factory in the 2010 Clint Eastwood film Hereafter.

It's not in use, right? What are they going to do with that building? That's a good photo.

No, it is in use. Just to the right, outside of the photograph are the two bridges crossing the Sacramento River to Vallejo. (I put a small picture of them in the other day.) The big C and H Pure Cane Sugar sign is partly obstructed by the bridges, but it faces westward towards the mouth of the river and the San Pablo Bay - the northern section of the San Francisco Bay. It comes on every night and can be seen from very great distances. It sort of flashes and the letters change colors and illumine one at a time, etc. The C & H factory is very old, but big ships dock at it's wharves all the time, and it also has a huge cogeneration plant which supplies the town and factory with electrical power (it is a natural gas powered facility) but then utilizes the steam that turned the electric generators for certain factory processes in the refining of the sugar. The wharves are on the river side of the factory, and a small rail yard is on the land side of the building, bringing supplies to the factory and shipping the product out in bulk.

It is an impressive old style industrial complex. The sign is like a light show at night and flashes, changes colors, etc. It has a large cogeneration facility attached that is natural gas powered, and generates 240 megawatts of electricity, and then utilizes the steam for the sugar manufacturing processes. It can accommodate about three ships on the river side of the building, and there is a small rail yard for bulk cars and tank cars on the landward side for shipping supplies in and product out.

Here is an intact and viable industrial complex that is fully integrated with the town. Me "love" too.

In the movie, which has three separate story lines that intersect at the end, the CandH sign is shown briefly, and then some interior shots of Matt Damon operating a forklift in the warehouse, and interacting with the foreman in the time clock/locker room. These scenes are not well lit and kind of dreary - lifelike in other words, as one would expect to see in such an antiquated industrial environment.
