Mare Island was a naval base for 150 years before it closed about 15 years ago. There is a lot of forgotten and lost ordinance that they are trying haphazardly to clean up: slow work/budget cuts. So, there is mostly restricted access and people probably don't like walking. There are many signs warning about rattle snakes and ticks. Unknown to everybody apparently are rest stops along the trail with coolers full of sodas and bottles of water - you leave a $1 donation in a can and take your choice. Nice. I wonder how long that will last? Probably until the people show up, huh.
