You think so? I love Olivier. I thought he always sounded very serious like you should when you are narrating a great tragedy, which is what the war was. Watching that show was like immersing yourself in a bottomless well of misery and sorrow.
Well I agree. I saw it several times on PBS. I thought the one about world War One narrated by Robert Ryan was very good too. Did you see that one? WW1 accounts always seems to hit me harder than WW2 for some reason.
I don't think I've ever seen that one. I saw that Stanley Kubrick movie with Kirk Douglas called 'Paths of Glory' about WWI. I've read about the gas attacks. I've read that story about the men from both sides coming out of their trenches at Christmas to celebrate with each other and then going back to kill each other after it was all over. I'm not that well versed in WWI, however.
Yes, I've seen Paths of Glory. One of my favorite of all films is a silent from 1925 called The Big Parade about WW1. Another very good WW1 movie from recently is The Long Engagement aspects of which reminded me of Paths of Glory when I saw it a few years ago. Here is a youtube talking about early WW1 films. Big Parade is about in the middle of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2oYM0cLKNY
