I imagine two people on either end of the line of poles holding a tin can to their ear with the wires coming out of the cans. "Hello? Hello! Can you hear me?"
The wire could be electrified and attached to the bottom of the can creating a sort of diaphragm I think. That is how early telephones and recording machines worked if I remember my technical history. The electric diaphragm reproduced what the taught string would do: vibrate the metal diaphragm, with the sides of the can being the amplifier, but over much longer distances. I always wanted to try one of those string/tin can telephones, but heh, now we have fun cell phones and computers.
I've seen all kinds of shapes of phones. Fancy ones, old fashioned ones, a phone that was like a lobster, etc. I never saw one shaped like a tin can though. We should come up with a design for a land line phone that looks like a Campbell's soup can, market it, and retire.
