This guy seems to like my back yard. He's been hanging around back there for a month or two. Sometimes I see his mate with him. The mate is more grey than blue, but also has blue, and is a little smaller and less extreme of a dresser. Maybe the mate seems smaller because the tail feathers are not so long, and she is actually bigger.

I had this blue and white porcelain bowl from the Bombay store that was my mother's. I'd been using it to add water to the blender. She collected that blue and white stuff (only the cheap stuff though) and I encouraged her to do it because she liked it. Every time, a few times a week when I'd go over there I'd take her out places she liked to go. She always liked the same places: Cost Plus, Bombay Store, Dragon 2000, Trader Joe's, Countrywood Donuts, Navlet's - other places too, grocery store, Long's, the wacko Dr's. Once in a while I would get her to Border's for a coffee...

Anyway, I noticed that Blue was often drinking water out of the bowl when I would come outside. Then he'd fly away like a dart, but stop on the fence and watch me.

One day I went out back and Blue buzzed my head. What the... I wondered what that was all about when I heard this quiet banging noise. The gate was open and clattering in the breeze, the big bar I put across it to keep it closed was laying on the ground. Somebody had jumped over the fence, landed on top of the green yard waste dumpster thing, and then removed the bar and left. I investigated. Everything seemed OK. Blue flew past my head again. That's when I noticed that the blue/white water bowl was missing. Sure enough, the fence hopper had allegedly stolen the water bowl. Earlier I had heard some people talking outside, and sometime after that I heard something that sounded like a flower pot being broken out in the alley, down a ways.

I locked up and took a tour down the alley to see if I could find my blue and white pot. I expected to find some big shards laying in the street, but I found nothing. I even looked in the weeds and over the other fences I could see over. Nothing. Nilla! Gone forever.

Back at the house I got this small blue plastic pail I had been using for the paper making and filled it up with water, put it in the same place as the blue and white had been. Blue and mate are still around all the time. They showed up every now and then these last few days while I was rebuilding the broken fence the cops knocked over (what a helluva big job that was). I guess they drink from the pail still; I never see them do so though. I splash water out of it so they will get the concept that now they have a pail to drink from (like in Anna Christie: "Shall I serve it in a pail?" Heh.), but I never see them drinking there. I'd have patched the blue and white with epoxy if I had found the pieces. The Bombay store folded a few years ago. The pail will have to do for now, but the repaired fence is an excellently done piece of work.

snappy dresser, blue is. Photobucket
