The raised green area at the top is the N. American plate which is moving south (right). The flat land in the foreground is the Pacific plate which is moving north (left). The wide horizontal rough ground area across the middle of the picture with the erosion and the scattered trees is the fault line, and you can see how the gullies and ravines formed from erosion have a down slant towards the left rather than straight down. This is a result of the two plates moving in opposite directions: the upper one to the right and the lower one to the left. The fault slips about 1 1/2 inches a year.
