This doll was grouped with three others (in another box) which had clothes. They were a single auction lot of four dolls. This one looked beaten up though; the unfortunate sister of the others.
I walk around and see things that I get an immediate emotional or other sort of response, and quickly frame a shot and take a picture or two. I don't really think about it lots of times, but just go with the instinct. This was one of those times.
I saw this doll at the auction house weekend before last. It was a three lot of dolls. The other two were in better condition and had clothes - sort of like nightgown clothes and were in a box together. This one was in it's own box. It's clothes are deeper down in the box underneath the doll. I just saw the doll quickly while I was looking at something else, and got a strong emotional response because of it's battered and vulnerable condition, so I snapped two quick pictures.
We go to the auction each month if we can, and after looking around for a few hours for things we might like to bid on - not too many for me, but Djaza always sees things she likes - then, I like to walk around with the camera out and see what I can find that interests me in some way or other. Two shelves above this doll were the Greek terracotta heads I posted a few days ago. Auctions are like a journey through the imagination - a strange museum where you might be able to take things home; sometimes things noticed are interior, disturbing, like this doll.
Very frequently there are dolls at the auctions. Sometimes large collections of them. You probably have seen me post doll pictures here in the past, though not recently.
We used to have an auction house in the centre of town, but I think they moved away. I liked to go in and have a look around, but it was back in the nineties. I do remember your other doll pictures. Funnily enough, I don't remember dolls coming up in the local auction house. It's possible they'd be more likely to come up in Glasgow or Edinburgh, though there were always dealers from all over the place at that auction place I knew.
Well, if you can, ask around where the auction house moved too, or if another auction house is anywhere nearby. People die in Scotland, yes? so there must be estate auctions. It's fun to go to them. We know the auctioneers now, and some of the dealers; we've been going for so long.
