Well, I don't really know. The SOMA area has many SRO hotels for poor people. He might live in one of those. I don't see the usual bags and clutter that homeless people usually have with them. Maybe he is disabled. He has an electric cart to ride around on it looks like. Disabled income from the government is minimal and only the smallest degree above poverty, but a place, maybe with Section 8, can be afforded.
The urban pigeons like to stay in their familiar area and come back all the time. I'd go to this little secluded spot I knew about to be alone for lunch during my union job (returning to the same spot just like them). I used to see the same few pigeons all the time and they would recognize me I guess and waddle over for some lunch. Eventually, one started eating bits of my lunch from my hand. Maybe these two are friends of that sort.
I know insects like beer. I read that in prehistory, people learned about fermentation and beer making, and it aided in the birth of civilization and farming. The beer required a place to store he grains and do the fermentation, and fields that needed to be cared for by farmers, not nomads. In addition, the beer was nutritious being a good source of calories, so people could store food in the form of beer. It's still a source of calories, and maybe birds have figured this out. The way pigeons walk... need I say more? It made Bud wiser, and he settled down happily into the stupor of urban life. lol.
