The river and the San Pablo Bay are never very rough, but crossing the San Francisco Bay after passing Angel Island can be pretty bumpy sometimes. The catamarans start to crest over the waves and then plunge into the troughs and you get an odd feeling in your loins and stomach as you are in a sort of free fall for a moment. The water when the hull goes over a wave crest and into the trough splashes way out and sometimes way up and gets the windows wet as well as any passengers out on the deck in the stern. It's fun, actually.
Sometimes crossing the wake of big ships causes that plunging of the ferry, and that peculiar sensation of almost like a roller coaster cresting the hills and the negative G's you feel.
