I used to make French style furniture. I learned how to make it in a 19th C. style by going to antique stores, drawing, measuring, and examining closely the construction/woodworking techniques; and then go home and adapt and copy the pieces. I thought I'd rather learn to make them myself than become a lawyer to be able to afford to buy them. I was correct in this. Today, I saw this pot rack and decided to draw a picture of it...

I'm super impressed by how you learned to do that--and how great to have the satisfaction that you made a good life decision. You knew yourself well. (I think I mainly did too... mainly.)

I like the pot rack. Were the pots copper? Brushed steel? They look good and solid.

The pots I saw on the original were rather costly and expensive copper, with brass filigree handles - like chef stuff from a Cordon Blu type place for show-off or something. I drew in my own pots and pans which are stainless steel and do have copper bottoms. I used hatching to darken the bottoms of the pans in the drawing, and gave the light green paper a slight electronic sepia tone which I thought might suggest the copper color. It seemed to have worked as both you and zyzyly (on LJ) mentioned copper utensils.

Here is a French style butcher block table I made in the distant past. I saw it in an antique store and made three copies in various sizes. I still have mine, sold the other two. In mine, the top comes off and then it unfolds into a sewing machine, the machine stores inside... people rarely do sewing and food prep at the same time, so it seemed like a good 2 in 1 multitask unit.

The table is gorgeous. My mom had one of those sewing machines in a table, a really old one, black with the gold-paint designs. It's still at my dad's house.

Thanks for saying so. I kind of specialized in pine, French style furniture. French, because it is so characterful, and pine, because it is humble, and also ages well, while more expensive woods, when they wear, look old and tired: damaged. In contrast to being damaged, the pine quickly acquires a patina. Old pine stuff is always a knockout to me.

My dad likes pine too, and maybe because he always used it, I like it as well.

I made one once, but when I moved, I decided to use it for my tools in the shop. It was fancier than this one, with three bins at the bottom. I have a place in my kitchen that this would work in though, so, I'll see if I feel like making it. Right now, I have the pots and pans in two big drawers which hold all of them nicely.
