Thanks. I'm thinking I will make a dust jacket instead of a cover. I was thinking heavy, brown, shopping bag paper for it - something quotidian and plebeian.
I used to cover all my paperback books with plain paper dust jackets. I didn't want anybody to see what I was reading. I also visited many bookstores in Italy when I was there, and noticed how all the books had a similar plain paper dustcover. The title was printed on it, but in the shelves, the books looked good, not like a junky, color-cacophonyscreaming to be picked up. I think that is where I got the idea to cover/conceal my paperbacks. Of course, I read a lot of classics, and it's annoying to have people interrupt you with, "The Iliad? What's it about? (Oy!) Why are you reading that?"... so it is a sort of self preservation strategy, as well as aesthetic.
Fair enough. Dust jackets drive me crazy (the ones that come on books anyway) because they always end up slipping off or getting torn, but your arguments in favor make sense.

I finally decided for a cover, to put on a dust jacket made from the brown paper of a grocery shopping bag - something very ordinary and plebeian. I put a thin bead of glue on the spine of the booklet to keep the binding strings tight and this glued the dust jacket onto the spine to keep it in place. It worked well and looked good.
