The Palace Hotel at Market and New Montgomery. This is the New Montgomery side above the main entrance, seen from shadowy Stevenson St., lair of assassins. President Clinton stayed there one time, as did Enrico Caruso. Caruso left immediately after the earthquake exclaiming, "San Francisco is a Hell of a place... Give me Vesuvio!"

It is gaudily luxurious, but the Garden Court restaurant is spectacular, Originally the 1875 hotel had a large drive-in central courtyard for carriages. The hotel was completely gutted in the fire after the 1906 Earthquake, but the shell remained. It was rebuilt in 1909 and the courtyard where the carriages arrived was glassed over and became the restaurant.
