They won a lot of stuff. Mom's poker face lightened up with each win, then would go "all business" with each new lot they would decide to bid on. The auctioneer Redge Martin enjoyed working with these two. The auction house is a fun place. I spend hours there with djaza every month, people watching, treasure hunting, and sometimes bidding.

I do this on a smaller scale: it's called Goodwill.

I sometimes wonder if the auction house does not do the same, picking up nouveau-pricy "antiques" from junk stores.

It used to be that the thrift stores had cool old jewelry pieces for not much money, but now they have jacked up the prices and put them behind glass like they are great treasures. When you can't afford the thrift store, you know something's wrong. :-p
